ISO 9000 is maintained by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and is administered by accreditation and certification bodies. The standards are revised every few years to keep them up-to-date.

The ISO 9000 series of standards is based on eight quality management principles that senior management can apply for organisational improvement:

  1. Customer focus
  2. Leadership
  3. Involvement of People
  4. Process Approach
  5. System approach to management
  6. Continual improvement
  7. Customer focus
  8. Factual approach to decision-making
  9. Mutually beneficial supplier relationships

Although the standards originated in manufacturing, they are now employed across most types of organisations and can include products and/or services.

The ISO 9000 series of standards has been designed to be compatible with and compliment other management systems, such as those for environmental (ISO 14000 series) and health and safety management (OHSAS 18000 series).
