system can effectively be implemented. It comprises two parts:
- OHSAS 18001 - Occupational health and safety management systems specification
- OHSAS 18002 - Guidelines for the implementation of OHSAS 18001

OHSAS 18000 is maintained by the International Organisation for Standardisation
(ISO) and is administered by accreditation and certification bodies. The standards
are revised every few years to keep them up-to-date.
The standard applies to all types and sizes of organisations and requires a commitment
to continual improvement and compliance with applicable legislation and regulations.
The main objectives of OHSAS 18000 are to:
- Reduce risk by improving the management of health and safety risks
- Improve operational efficiency and performance (including accident management reduction
and reduced downtime)
- Provide a competitive advantage of commitment to health and safety
- Reduce insurance premiums and compensation for breached legislations
It offers a source of guidance for introducing and adopting
health and safety management systems.
The OHSAS 18000 series of standards has been designed to be compatible with and
compliment other management systems, such as those for quality (ISO 9000 series)
and environmental (ISO 14000 series).
