You've probably invested a great deal in getting your ISO 9001/2 certificate on the wall. We want you to keep it there! There is now a real urgency to upgrade your quality system to reflect the year 2000 changes. If you're well underway, that's great. If not, please start taking steps to move forward. Otherwise it will eventually cost you more or leave a gap on the wall!
Why has the standard been changed?
All international standards are revised every few years to keep up with the times. The proposed changes to ISO 9001 will make it more applicable to every organisation, regardless of size and its product or service.
What are the changes?
The main changes are that senior management is required to have a greater involvement with the quality management system. In return, there is a more flexible approach to its documentation. Overall, the changes encourage organisations to become more customer focused by requiring continual improvement and planning for the future.

To complement ISO 9001 there is a very helpful document called ISO 9004. This interprets the requirements of ISO 9001 and provides useful guidance as to how to implement it. ISO 9004 is available from the same sources as ISO 9001 listed above. It is also produced on CD-ROM (together with ISO 9001 and some other useful information)
